I rebased this PR on top of #5334 in order to confirm random data race failure is really fixed. |

Works for me, although it doesn't matter too much from my point of view, but the disclaimer is that I come from a very github view of the world in which the unit of work is the PR and not really the commit. I think if we can get users to stick to that is fine, but I wouldn't fight users to rewrite the commit history just to match this convention. |
