We'd like to use System.Reflection.MetadataContext in the aspire CLI, which is a native AOT'd compiled app. But we are getting a lot of warnings when we reference it.

In theory it should work, correct? This is just reading data from System.Reflection.Metadata and creating RO reflection objects. It never actually executes code from the read assemblies. Trimming and native AOT should work.

We'd like to use System.Reflection.MetadataContext in the aspire CLI, which is a native AOT'd compiled app. But we are getting a lot of warnings when we reference it.

What's the intended use? IIRC we didn't prioritize annotating the MetadataLoadContext implementation because actually using the API for anything meaningful would result in trim/AOT warnings anyway because using MetadataLoadContext is indistinguishable from doing unanalyzable runtime reflection. We don't condone people suppressing trimming warnings and we'd literally have to tell people to suppress everything.

What's the intended use?

We are going to generate python and JS code by inspecting method signatures on .NET assemblies. So we load the .NET assembly's metadata and scan its types/methods. We won't ever invoke the .NET code.

actually using the API for anything meaningful would result in trim/AOT warnings anyway because using MetadataLoadContext is indistinguishable from doing unanalyzable runtime reflection. We don't condone people suppressing trimming warnings and we'd literally have to tell people to suppress everything.

That was our plan - to add checks/asserts for Assembly.ReflectionOnly in the code, and then suppress the trim warnings.

Maybe? But using MetadataContext is a much easier API to use and understand.
