No styling at all applied to components

I have followed all setup for a tailwind 4, nextjs project with pnpm but when loading in any component, the styling is completely absent. Note tailwind 4 is working fine and when i inspect the raw html i can see the css tags but no style on the page. What may be causing this?

please share a repo link or a minimal reproducible sandbox. There should be some misconfigurations or some setups are missing.

After further investigation, commenting out the following has fixed the issue.
@custom-variant dark (&:is(.dark *));
It is given as a step to add in step 3 of the manual global installation outlined here: https://www.heroui.com/docs/guide/installation.

This fails quietly and it seems that further tailwind configuration is needed to get this to work?

This is an ambiguity that arises when following the global manual installation instructions.
